Another Side of Strangers – 11/18/01

There is another side of most folks
lying to window seat strangers
about places yet to see
paying for your ticket when you’re broke

The shadows of bus station friends
shelter the winds of the road
offering a ride when the destination
was never asked and never told

Some claim there’s another side
a hidden smile that fills the cups of bums
and frowns on the unwilling lost
who ride on empty storms

Those who sleep through sunrise
have a side that picks rock over a handshake
an umbrella over a drink of insouciance
a friend will cross the desert to avoid the ocean

There is a side to most folks
that is out of questions to ask
selling answers to join the crowd
that takes the bus to a crease on a map
